Hi all,
I'm going to do Ying Qin a favour :D
Message from Mr Ong (through FB):Ying Qin,
Sorry I got back to your msg so late, have not been able to facebook for a long time.It was my fren who told me abt your msg after seeing it on my wall. = )
I guess after 2 weeks, you all have had plenty of time to digest the outcome of SYF. In my honest opinion, I too felt that you all played very well. I've always been impressed with the convincingness of RGS playing artistically challenging
I EDITED. HE SPELT WRONGLY. pieces.
Of course there were some hic-ups in the slow and soft sections that were apparent in intonation and entrances. I'm sure Mr. Oura had a good long debrief with you since abt technical issues that can be improved.
As for results, I think you should know the other bands that everyone though did well but didn't get the desired result, not just Gold medal hopefuls but even silver medals and bronze medal hopefuls. We can only do our best to please the judges, the rest is up to them. The consolation I had when some of my bands didn't get the desired results was when other conductors called me up and told me that the bands sounded good and were too surprised with the results. It feels great to have an entire community behind your back even though the 7 judges didn't agree.
To sum up, I believe you all enjoyed the performance, most importantly, you all enjoyed the process towards the performance. The results shouldn't have any impact on your self-worth,it shouldn't get in the way of music making. Continue to play and enjoy your music making in the band. You have an excellent conductor and a great tradition in the band that has lasted generations. You are definitely gonna remember your life in the band, syf will only be a small part of it.
I'm happy with your show of concern for the band, as I said before, focus on the things we have control over.
Have a good week ahead!
Mr. Ong
